Have you ever heard the term Six Degrees of Separation?
The theory behind it is that anyone in the world can actually connect with anyone else in the world through a total of no more than five people, one of whom would be a personal acquaintance.
Years ago, three students at Albright College in Pennsylvania (USA) invented a game called the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, with the goal of linking any actor to Kevin Bacon (Footloose) through no more than five connections (with Kevin, effectively, being the “sixth degree”).
Keeping that in mind, let me tell you a story . . .
Several years after that Kevin Bacon game came out (it ran as part of a series of TV commercials), one of the television networks here in the USA aired a reality TV show featuring country music star, Shania Twain.
Based upon the six degrees of separation concept, a group of aspiring musicians were chosen to participate, with their end goal being to get an introduction to Shania, herself, through no more than five people. If they succeeded in doing so, they would be rewarded with the opportunity to perform for Shania and the representatives of her record label, in the hopes of getting a record deal themselves.
While I don’t remember where all of the musicians were from, I do remember one girl, in particular, who was from a tiny town in Oklahoma (out in the middle of nowhere), and the first person she decided to reach out to (of the five people she was allowed to contact) was the guy who sold her her (used) pickup truck.
Now let me stop here for a minute and be honest with you . . .
When she chose that guy as one of her five, my first reaction was: “You’ve got to be kidding me! The guy who sold you your truck? What a waste of time!”
Even though I grew up in a small town myself, I was (obviously) being quite close-minded and judgemental about her choice.
Now, back to our story . . .
Through this guy, and the four other people she was allowed to connect with, this girl did, indeed, get to perform for Shania! Actually, all of the musicians succeeded in their quest!
When I joined my last network marketing company, I heard the phrase “it’s not who you know, it’s who they know” more times than I could count. And, honestly, I found it to be quite annoying! Then I started thinking about who I knew and realized that there was a LOT of truth to that statement!
As I mentioned, I was raised in a very small town in Illinois. Actually, it’s not even a town. It’s a village. Yes, a village. Population 2500.
But today, if you were to play the six degrees of separation game with me, here are just some of the people with whom you could connect (or could have while they were alive):
- Bud Adams, Tennessee Titans (1 degree)
- Barak Obama, Former President (4 degrees)
- Brad Pitt, Actor (2 degrees)
- George Steinbrenner, New York Yankees (1 degree)
- Mark Zuckerberg (2 degrees)
Now, I am NOT telling this to you to impress you. Rather, I’m telling it to you to impress upon you how important it is to keep an open mind in this business!
If the average person knows 600 people, that means that if you were to get together with your best friend, between the two you, you would, in essence, know 1200 people.
And, if those 1200 people have a contact list of 600, that now expands your network to 720,000 individuals . . . 720,000 people with whom you could share your product or service, or business opportunity! Do you see where I’m going with this?
Then, add in the six degrees of separation concept and the whole world becomes your oyster!
